So. A survey conducted by the website saveme4later.com finds out that most women get the greatest thrill while buying a handbag.
Now why doesn’t that come as a surprise to me, the owner of more handbags than I could ever use realistically, considering I rotate my bags every couple of weeks and still have a couple which have never emerged blinking into the bright light of days from their packaging.
The thrill of buying a handbag, says the research, is more than the thrill of buying a pair of shoes, jewellery or underwear. Other items that made it into that list of a quick frisson of joy upon purchase include a summer dress, a well fitting pair of jeans, beauty products, a little black dress and chocolates. I keep the summer dress, the little black dress and the chocolates aside and the rest of it all would apply to me. And yes, the jewellery apart too. Can’t afford any at the current gold prices, might just salivate outside jewellery store show windows and mop my drool surreptiously before moving on.
I am a serial handbag shopper. My frequency of handbag shopping has gone down substantially over the past couple of years, whether lack of opportunity, the resolution to not buy unless on sale and available at a bargain mark down price, or the overwhelming guilt at lack of storage space which led me to cram sly purchases into the linen cupboard, the spouse’s unused shelf space, etc, I don’t know, but I do know that I’ve stopped buying handbags with the mania I once had.
The only handbag I’ve bought myself this year was on my birthday in June. That too as a gift from the mater to me. And much time was spent checking practicalities like ease of opening, accessibility of change pocket and, gasp, sturdiness. This, you might realise, would have been unthinkable a few years ago when I would have tripped into a store, looked around, spotted a bag that was most impractical but was yelling my name in capital letters, and hauled it off to the cash counter, flashing the credit card like a weapon, without bothering about whether said item was on sale or not, and returning home, glowing with the thrill of acquisition. And upon returning home, the contents of current handbag in use would have been promptly transferred to new acquisition with no delay brooked and new bag toted the very next day for public appearance.
The handbag bought in June this year was only aired in public on birthday. And now fished out again a couple of days ago, now that the monsoon seems to have said its final farewells for the year, with much waving and reluctance to part. I was being, god help me, I’m heading to an early grave, practical about not getting the embossed leather pattern ruined by me getting caught in a sudden shower, and taking around a sturdy practical patent leather bag which had weathered much abuse and which I wouldn’t sob buckets for in the event that the rains ruined it beyond redemption. The new bag high has long faded and now that said new bag has been pressed into service, the new bag smell dissipated and the tedium of familiarity making it lose its charm.
I think I’m overdue for a new bag purchase high. When are them sales happening? Promise myself to buy a completely blingy, outrageously impractical one this time. Just to prove to myself that I’m not sliding into dotage.
What is your most preferred new purchase for a purchase high?
Psst: I also am guilty of more lipsticks and shoes and sunglasses than I need, but let’s not even start on that.

My guilty pleasure would be handbags too, and lately as old age knocks, clutches! I realized some time back that while some people motivate themselves to do better at their jobs and earn more by saving for the next car, house, etc.. I aim from handbag to handbag 😀 I know more people are crazy about shoes but it’s a pain to find shoes in my small shoe size.. so I guess I shower all my shoe love on the bags too!
I tell you, old age is a bad thing. It should be banned. It makes one practical.

My guilty pleasure is definitely lingerie! I do curb my addiction but the high I get from it far surpasses that brought on by shoes(sigh – irresistible) handbags, books, LBDs or furniture (that’s a dangerous one :D). However, take heart, I believe the sales are happening soon.
Lingerie? Strangely enough I never had that as a fix.

Hello Kiran,
I took the liberty of linking this post from mine and also quoting from this space!
You’re welcome

Clothes… doesn’t have to be an LBD, just stuff that looks good on me- I take extra pleasure in fitting into size Small (I used to be XL).
Other than that I like really cheap (Rs.5) nail polish, and bracelets, which I don’t wear often, but absolutely adore!
That’s cute…

My guilty shopping is books for my son. I cannot pass up a good book exhibition without getting my son anything. i just love the fact that he devours books and so books it is. the entire set of Amar Chitra Katha, TinTin, Asterix and relunctantly Harry Potter as my niece introduced it to him and he was hooked on it, so i bought him the whole series including the latest one. so let me know of old worldly book series that we might have enjoyed and would love to share it with my son. Where can i find good old Phantom and Mandrake. I used to enjoy them. i am desperately trying to keep him away from my neighbour’s Archie and Betty collections. He is too young for that.
Aww, you are a good mom, you are.

Save up for the LV. But you know that already.
*sigh* Like Dorothy Parker, eh, take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves.

I am with you when it comes to handbags, and let’s not forget shoes! I think I am addicted to the smell of new leather. Sometimes, I just clutch my bags to my nose and inhale deeply.
Sigh! Such an expensive addiction 😦
